This Build your own MA (BYOMA) short course will provide you with the means to evaluate the nature and development of advertising in relation to the consumer society in Europe and America; from the perspective of cultural theory. You will critically assess the relationship between advertising and society, and re-examine advertising as an aspect of cultural production.
This course will help you develop a broader critical understanding of the methods used to analyse the content of advertisements, and to evaluate theoretical perspectives which relate, considering advertisements as part of the culture that gives rise to them. You will also develop a critical understanding of the methods that can be used to analyse the content of advertisements

Course details Integral to our courses is the belief that people improve their professional practice by taking time out to reflect on and reassess what they currently do in the workplace and by sharing their real life experiences with the other like-minded professionals. This short course will examine topics such as: The historical origins of the modern advertising industry The relationship between advertising and culture The impact of modern social theory on the evaluation and development of advertising analytical methods for the evaluation and appraisal of advertising The relationship between advertising and art; gender representations, race, popular science, politics, sexual imagery The place, function and role of advertising in the context of changing media environments Branded entertainment and product placement Spoof advertising.
