Programa académico

The MA Film is divided into five modules taken over three terms (if studied full time). Each module is designed to be flexible, allowing you to bring your own interests to the assignments and develop key skills and knowledge that will benefit not only your final project the dissertation – but your ambitions and career goals beyond this course.

Modules
Film Research – Term 1 (30 Credits)
This module will equip you with the practice based research skills and methodologies you need to engage in debates across a range of media focused issues, from ethics to social media and more. As part of this module, you will undertake your own research project, usually relating to a fundamental feature of your final practical project, such as a key scene from your script or a film depicting work in progress. By the end of this module you will produce a report alongside the practical findings of your research. These findings can be presented in a wide range of forms, from a website to a DVD or series of experiments.

Scripting Producing and Directing – Terms 1 and 2 (30 Credits)
Taught by practitioners with expertise in each of the three core features of filmmaking, this module will take you through the entire industry process used to script, produce and direct films. From the initial idea to the fundamentals of shooting, this module will give you the knowledge and skills needed to take a film from script to screen. By the end of this module you will have produced the draft script and portfolio of materials needed for your final dissertation.

Moving Image Practice Terms 1 and 2 (30 Credits)
This practice led module allows you to apply the knowledge and skills you acquired in the Scripting Producing and Directing module to a series of creative briefs. This is a chance for you to experiment and develop your practice, try out script ideas, familiarise with equipment and crews, and hone your skills. Weekly seminars will be held to allow students to present and critique each other's work, culminating in a portfolio of completed briefs at the end of the module.

Film Professional Project (MDA4010) – Terms 1 and 2 (30 credits)
This module aims to give students practical insight into professional film practices in managing and creating and disseminating film projects for public audiences. On this module, professional practice learning is applied directly to a live project. The current partner for this project is North London Literary Festival (NLLF), and provides a range of opportunities for the MA Film students to produce promotional, creative, dramatic, interactive and/or documentary based work for the festival audiences.

Film Dissertation – Term 3 (60 credits)
This module allows you the opportunity to bring together all the knowledge and skills you have developed throughout the course and apply them to a professional standard project of your choosing that combines theory and practice. As a culmination of your studies, this is a valuable and exciting chance for you to acquire considerable insight into a specific area of moving image practice and benefit from combining practical activity and theoretical inquiry.

For this dissertation you can choose to focus more heavily on either the theory or practice side of the project, with options to weight one element more heavily than the other according to your individual ambitions beyond the programme. By the end of this module you will be looking towards the next step of your career, professional or academic or both, and will use the Dissertation as a specific tool for advancing those ambitions.
