1 MEANING

The student's message should be completely clear.

2 OPENING A CONVERSATION

The student is easily able to open a conversation and shows good knowledge of appropriate phrases and expressions.

3 MAINTAINING A CONVERSATION

The student should be able to "turn-take" and adapt to new topics or changes of direction throughout a conversation. They should be able to maintain a comfortable, natural speed in everyday contexts. When changes in topic or direction of the conversation occur, the student is able to react appropriately. The student's hesitations should be for organising thoughts rather than searching for words.

4 ACCURACY

Language errors will be rare. The listener should easily be able to understand, without the need to provide any help.

5 VOCABULARY

The student should have a wide range of vocabulary and be able to substitute or avoid any items that cause difficulty. The student should be very effective at communicating in everyday context to express ideas and opinions.

6 PRONUNCIATION

The student's pronunciation should be consistently good. The student should show good control of sounds, stress and intonation. There should be easy communication with the listener.
