Management by Consciousness Defined
Management by consciousness is an exercise in harmonizing men, material and methods toward the fulfillment of goals leading to human development, social benefit and global welfare.
Key Principles
• Material wealth is secondary, spiritual efflorescence is primary.
• Ethical business is consecrated to a sacred cause and universal welfare. Business is neither black or white. Business is sacred! All depends on the spirit in which the business is set up and carried out, the principles on which it is built and the use to which it is turned.
• There are more things concealed in human approach, attitudes and behavior that are really dreamt of by traditional management pundits.
• Values, value-orientation and values-based leadership are an experiential process.
• As spirituality is absolute, the struggle to realize it is an enduring process of change.
Corporate Consciousness Strategies
By Dick Conrad, Senior Vice President, Hewlett Packard
The following strategies and considerations are offered for any organization taking on a global citizenship initiative:
1. Commit. Senior management must be engaged, including the senior managements of your suppliers. Expectations should be set and the program should be put into writing. These activities articulate the commitment.
2. Create Awareness. The program and its goals need to be continually reinforced, setting the context with employees and the supply base. Develop a Web site; make the program an agenda item that routinely gets discussed and stays on people's radar screens. It's also important to share and sell the benefits of the program. Your suppliers should know that those commit to your program will enjoy a larger share of the business.
3. Communicate and Collaborate. Open communication and active engagement is much more effective than any policing actions. This communication leads to rapid improvement.
4. Partnering for Success. Partnerships occur on several levels, including a) internal stakeholders (particularly those supplier-facing people), b) supply chain members, c) industry groups, d) government offices, and e) non-government organizations.
PS: The journey to social responsibility is not always an easy journey, but it is important to remember that it is just that: a journey. It's important just to start by doing whatever you can. If you wait until all the policies are place and you have a complete plan, chances are that day will never comes. Just get the journey started.
