Behavioral science, linguistics, and cognitive psychology have produced theoretical models and pedagogies of first- and second-language learning and acquisition. This class examines how these theories apply to TESL/TEFL. Also considered are the critical factors affecting language development. Among those are psychological factors such as motivation and communication strategies, sociocultural factors such as dialects and language policy, and socioeconomic relevancies. Participants draw upon their language learning and teaching experiences for examples that relate theory to practice. Included is an examination of teachers’ and students’ roles, error correction, and various methods for structuring classroom interaction.
